Help: Fun sought

I am really struggling to entertain Champ (and not go mental myself) these days. A few hours some days are taken up by playgroup or playdates, but that still leaves about 10 waking hours each day to try to fill in.

As the weather gets cooler, the park is less and less appealing (wet slide, anyone?), Champ tears the library up in 5 minutes when we go to change books each week and his toys are often only appealing when Mummy sits to play too (even then we are both bored soon enough).

I take him swimming whenever he is well (not often this weather), to playcentres occasionally, and shopping whenever I can't avoid it, but these are pretty expensive activities and we just can't do them everyday.

Can anyone suggest some free/cheap activities Champ and I can do to keep me sane and tire him out?

  1. That's a tough one, we struggle with boredom here too sometimes. I wonder about a local organized mom's group. Ours is $25 for the year, and there are tons of activities every month, you pick and choose. For example, yesterday was the monthly book club. The moms talk about the book while the kiddos play. Different toys, different playmates, different surroundings.

  2. This is a tough one! We sometimes go walk the mall. Peanut is entertained by watching others babies/kids. And some places have little play areas - always a plus. Beyond that, I have no advice; it's almost summer here so we're totally taking advantage of the good weather to keep her outside and burning energy there!

  3. I am so excited that you are considering cloth diapers! I'll look forward to hearing how your party goes.

All-in-ones (AIOs) are a good way to go. One downside is that it takes them forever to dry because you can't separate the absorbant part from the cover like you could with a pocket diaper, fitted diaper, or prefold. And they are sized, so you have to buy bigger ones as they grow, and they aren't cheap. (Less of a problem for us since our kiddos are already in the larger sizes.) I think a downside is that they are pretty thick, and in the summer it's nice to have a few fitted diapes so they can run around with less cover. But as it's becoming winter where you are (WEIRD!) :) that's obviously less of an issue.

I think starting with 6-12 AIOs is smart, maybe a couple of pockets (very similar to AIOs except they dry easier due to the insert feature), and maybe a couple of fitteds (with covers) just for pure cute factor. If the whole prefold thing doesn't appeal to you, you can skip it for now.

    Have fun!!
